ThomasThomas Leibundgut

My name is Thomas, and I’m a PhD student at the classics department studying the social and economic history of antiquity with a special focus on the intersection of gender, migration, and urban labour markets. I grew up in Switzerland, a country famous for its multilingualism, and learned French as my first foreign language when I was twelve. Since then, I’ve learned three more modern languages and two ancient ones, and while formal instruction has been the bedrock of my language learning, I’ve always found real conversations with friends or co-workers to be most helpful when learning languages—an experience I would like to share with you.

 Portuguese LCPs

Alexis Alexis Pearce

Hi! My name is Alexis, and I am a PhD student in Iberian and Latin American Cultures with a focus on 20th and 21st-century Latin American literature. After spending my sophomore year of high school as an exchange student in southern Peru, I felt compelled to continue learning about literature and social justice issues in Spanish. Before beginning graduate studies, I also began studying Portuguese. To date, I have taught Spanish and Portuguese at Stanford and am thrilled to continue working with students to improve their confidence in Portuguese and to help find doors to open through language learning. In my free time I like to take walks with friends and family, find dogs to pet, and keep active through dance and yoga.

JessicaJessica Magallón

Hi! My name is Jessica and I'm a senior majoring in Iberian and Latin American Cultures. My passions include anything and everything related to Mexico and Brazil (especially food, I LOVE food!) as well as the rest of Latin America, hispanic and lusophone literature and music, dogs, and self-care. Although I've spoken Spanish my whole life, I began learning Portuguese here at Stanford two years ago, and since then I've studied it in Middlebury and even interned at Canal Futura in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, so feel free to ask me about those experiences or anything else you're curious about regarding Brazil and Portuguese in general. I'm happy to help!

Some fun facts about myself: I have lived in Madrid, Spain for about 6 months both studying and/or working, I once made six cheesecakes in a few hours, and I’ve watched Avatar the Last Airbender WITH The Legend of Korra at LEAST 10 times! I hope to see y’all soon!

I love watching (and talking about) Latin American movies, reading creative writing stories, and learning the art of embroidery. I am learning Portuguese and have greatly improved my speaking skills with the help of the LCPs.
