Undergraduate, graduate, and professional students are invited to apply to work as a Peer Learning Consultant in the Communications Division. The Communications Division is comprised of undergraduate and graduate students who seek to increase awareness of CTL's student learning programs and events across campus, promote practical, evidence-based learning strategies, and foster a culture of academic resilience at Stanford. Team member responsibilities include graphic design, social media content creation, and copywriting. Projects include creating program and event flyers, developing visual and written content for Instagram, and contributing to CTL's weekly academic skills newsletter.

Copywriter

Summary

The Copywriter writes and edits content for CTL’s student-facing newsletter, flyers, and social media accounts, with the aim of boosting awareness of CTL’s student learning programs, increasing student engagement with our programs, and promoting evidence-based learning strategies. As a key figure within the communications division, the Copywriter is responsible for capturing the voice of CTL student learning programs and presenting content in a clear, concise, and compelling manner, often translating existing content about academic skills into short form. This role reports to an Academic Coach. 

What you'll do - sample projects

  • Gather, write, and edit content for the Academic Skills Newsletter, a weekly e-newsletter that reaches 2,500+ undergraduate and graduate students with news on upcoming events, CTL  resources, and academic skills tips
  • Translate existing handouts and/or academic articles about evidence-based learning strategies into brief social media posts and newsletter tips, possibly in collaboration with our Graphic Designer and/or Social Media Content Strategist
  • Work with Graphic Designer to create compelling flyers about our Student Learning Programs, including subject tutoring, the Language Conversation Partner program, Academic Coaching, and other academic skills resources
  • Collaborate with other divisions within the larger CTL Student Learning Programs team to develop high-quality learning resources that are consistent in their writing style and tone
  • Ensure that all content follows Stanford and CTL identity and communications guidelines and is accessible

Compensation and hourly requirements

Compensation for this role begins at $18/hour for undergraduate students and $29/hour for graduate students. Work will be primarily asynchronous and flexible, with the Copywriter able to set hours as needed to complete work ahead of deadlines. However, support and accountability will also be provided through weekly meetings with your manager and/or other team members.

Estimated weekly work time will be 4–8 hours per week. Although our goal is to have a relatively consistent number of work hours per week so you can plan ahead, there may be some variance depending on your availability and what projects you’re working on.

Who you are

An undergraduate or graduate student at Stanford University with: 

  • interest and/or experience writing and editing a newsletter
  • interest in helping other students reduce academic stress, improve their study skills and mindsets, and achieve their academic goals
  • ability to translate long text and dense academic research into pithy, actionable tips
  • ability to write in a consistently professional but friendly tone
  • ability to adhere to an established style guide
  • ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • ability to receive and respond to feedback effectively
  • ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • excellent time management skills

  • Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student at Stanford
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA overall
  • Must have a strong commitment to helping peers learn

Social Media Content Strategist

Summary

The Social Media Content Strategist in the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) proposes and creates content for CTL’s student-facing social media accounts (primarily Instagram), with the aim of boosting awareness of CTL’s  student learning programs, increasing student engagement with our programs, and promoting evidence-based learning strategies. As a key figure within the communications division, the Social Media Content Strategist is aware of Stanford students’ subtle and shifting needs and iterates on published content based on audience response. This role reports to an Academic Coach. 

What you'll do - sample projects

  • Develop a social media content calendar for each academic quarter (in collaboration with your manager and other stakeholders), taking into consideration what topics are important to students at different points of the quarter and what media types resonate most (e.g., Story, Reel, post, etc.) 
  • Create short-form videos related to academic skills (possibly in collaboration with other CTL staff) that speak to an undergraduate and/or graduate student audience, while still capturing the CTL persona
  • Collaborate with Copywriter and/or Graphic Designer to create compelling social media content using Canva and other tools
  • Schedule approved posts and monitor audience response, suggesting updates to future posts as appropriate  
  • Work with Internal Communications Strategist to analyze social media metrics and identify insights we can apply to future content 
  • Ensure that all content follows Stanford and CTL identity and communications guidelines and is accessible

Compensation and hourly requirements

Compensation for this role begins at $18/hour for undergraduate students and $29/hour for graduate students. Work will be primarily asynchronous and flexible, with the Social Media Content Strategist able to set hours as needed to complete work ahead of deadlines. However, you might be asked to stop by a CTL-sponsored student event, such as a tabling event or a weekend Study Hall, to take pictures and share them on social media. In addition, support and accountability will be provided through weekly meetings with your manager and/or other team members. 

Estimated weekly work time will be 4–8 hours per week. Although our goal is to have a relatively consistent number of work hours per week so you can plan ahead, there may be some variance depending on your availability and what projects you’re working on. (For example, you might be busier right before the start of a new quarter, when we usually create the social media content calendar for that upcoming quarter.)

Who you are

An undergraduate or graduate student at Stanford University with: 

  • interest and/or experience in managing an Instagram or other social media accounts
  • interest in providing a student perspective on different learning topics and comfort with acting in an advisory role to professional staff 
  • interest in creative projects and willingness to try new things to “see what sticks”
  • interest in helping other students reduce academic stress, improve their study skills and mindsets, and achieve their academic goals
  • ability to incorporate a professional but friendly tone into social media content
  • ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • ability to receive and respond to feedback effectively
  • ability to work independently and with minimal supervision

Graphic Designer

What you'll do:

  • Developing social media content (both brainstorming and generating new content, in collaboration with a professional staff member and a student social media specialist, as well as designing corresponding graphics) 
  • Establishing a strong brand identity for the PLC program 
  • Creation of new logos, branding materials, and other graphic elements used in advertising events and the PLC program for a variety of audiences (all students, outside organizations, graduates, undergraduates, various departments, etc.) 
  • Improving UI/UX experience on the PLCP website 
  • Reviewing proposed content and providing feedback on its suitability for target audience, its design, etc. 
  • Independent work, if desired, to continually improve the program’s design, management, social media strategy, and website 
  • Additional design work, partnership-building, and project/program management as requested by Lead Learning Consultants

Compensation and hourly requirements:

Compensation for this role begins at $18/hour for undergraduate students and $28/hour for graduate students. Work will be primarily asynchronous and flexible, with the Graphic Designer able to set hours as needed to complete work ahead of deadlines; requirements will be completed based on division member’s availability, with support and accountability provided through regular meetings with the division lead and other supporting program members.

Estimated weekly work time will be 4-8 hours per week. There may be some variance in hours depending on division member’s preference and requests our program receives, but our goal is to have a relatively consistent number of hours per week so division members can plan ahead. 

Who You are: 

  • An undergraduate or graduate student at Stanford University with: 
    • interest and/or experience in design, especially UI/UX and digital media, interest and/or experience in creating social media content; familiarity with Canva, Picsart, and/or Adobe Photoshop is a plus but not required, 
    • ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, 
    • excellent time management skills, and 
    • the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision

  • Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate, co-term, masters, doctoral, or professional student
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Co-term and masters students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA overall; graduate and professional students must be in good standing with their department/program

  • Must possess outstanding interpersonal skills, time management skills, and attention to detail

  3. Admission: All candidates will be informed about a decision no later than two weeks after the interview. Successful candidates will be given 48 hours to accept the offer. Please note that the turnaround time between admission and onboarding is relatively short.
